Born in Madrid in 1965, José Molina is a Spanish artist who lives in Italy. He is known for his suggestive works that investigate the deep feelings and contradictions of the human soul. The artist’s skill in drawing is evident in his representations, detailed and realistic but at the same time visionary and surreal.
From his first series Morir para vivir, an autobiographical reflection of the investigation of death as a moment of rebirth, to the acclaimed Sentimentos collection, Molina’s art is a social and cultural commitment, but at the same time an investigation on human nature. The taste for metamorphosis and dreamlike atmospheres belongs to all his works, which, as happens for example in Polìtico (honorable) or El ùnico Dios verdadero, do not fail to criticize the hypocrisies of the world in which we live.
In José Molina’s latest cycle, A Hero Never Dies, the artist puts aside the gloomy and deliberately disturbing atmospheres of his previous works and he prefers a more Pop and carefree vision. The faces of masterpieces of Western art or myths of mass culture are superimposed on Lego men: this creates an effective contradiction between the expressiveness of the faces and the fixity of the body, reflecting upon the idea of heroism in contemporary society.
Throughout his career José Molina has exhibited his works in prestigious institutions including the Triennale of Milan, Fondazione Stelline (Milan), Fondazione Mudima (Milan), Real Academia de España (Rome), Museo Poldi Pezzoli (Milan), Reggia di Caserta and Palazzo Ducale in Modena.
